Big suitcases on the Shinkansen: the 160 cm rule
Bags up to 160 cm in total size need no reservation. Bags from 161 to 250 cm need a seat with an oversized baggage area, or you pay 1,000 yen. Over 250 cm is not allowed.
The three size groups
Add the length, width and height of your bag. This rule is for the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen.
- 160 cm or less: no reservation needed. Keep it at your feet, on the overhead rack or in the baggage area on the deck.
- 161 to 250 cm: reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
- Over 250 cm: you cannot bring it on board.
How to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area
The ticket costs the same as a normal reserved seat. The baggage space is behind the last row of seats in some cars, and it is shared by the passengers in that row.
- At a ticket machine or online, choose "Seat with an oversized baggage area".
- Or ask staff at a JR ticket office. With a Japan Rail Pass, tell the staff or use the Japan Rail Pass reservation.
- Reservations open one month before the travel date.
If you do not reserve
You can still bring a big bag, but there is a 1,000 yen fee (tax included). The conductor will assign a storage space. If the seats are full, you may be asked to take a later train.
Tips
- Measure your suitcase before you go. Wheels and handles count.
- Use the cable and lock provided in the oversized area. You can lock it with your IC card, as shown in the guide.
- If your plan changes, change your reservation before you board.
FAQ
Is there an extra charge for the oversized baggage seat?
No. The seat costs the same as a regular reserved seat. The 1,000 yen fee applies only if you bring a large bag without a reservation.
Do other trains have the same rule?
This rule is for the Shinkansen lines named above. Conventional (non-Shinkansen) lines do not require a reservation for oversized baggage.
What if I want to send my bags ahead?
A paid luggage delivery service is another option. Check the JR Central page for details.
